The 2024 Annual Meeting of the Professional Soil Scientists Association of California took place on April 25-27 in Yolo and Colusa Counties.

Thursday evening there was an opening reception at the Center for Land-Based Learning. Thanks to the CLBL folks for hosting us, and introducing us to the good work they do there- Mary Kimball, Sri Sethuratnam, and Cathy Taddei!

Friday we had an all day bus tour exploring the proposed Sites Reservoir Project in Sites and Maxwell, with discussions led by Joel Butterworth, Dave Smith, Jeff Peters, and Cheyanne Harris. Topics covered included- site soils and geology, fluvial morphology, and the history and status of the project.

Following this was a visit to Matchbook Wines, where we saw some unique grape and olive farming operations on some special soils. The visit included lunch and wine tasting. Thanks to Bryan Rahn and Greg Giguiere.

Friday evening we held our annual banquet and business meeting at the California Agriculture Museum. We enjoyed tours of the museum’s collection, and dinner catered by Father Paddy’s.

Saturday morning was a trip to the Kachituli Oxbow wetland mitigation project. We toured the 250 acre riparian oak forest and wetland preserve, led by David Kelley, observing wildlife and ecological restoration techniques. Thanks to Bart Wickel of the Yolo Audubon Society, Rich Yeung of the Elkhorn Volunteer Fire Department and George Asimakopoulos of the State Lands Commission.
