Registration is open for our annual meeting in the Joshua Tree region. Please make your plans to attend and, as usual, enjoy mixing with other soils enthusiasts and visit this fascinating California area.
The focus of the meeting will be on the Mojave soils, touring through Joshua Tree National Park, and exploring different parts of Riverside and San Bernardino Counties. We will be based in Yucca Valley. Tours by carpool will be on Friday and Saturday.
You will be responsible for your own lodging, with campgrounds and BLM land plentiful in the area for camping, and many options for hotels/motels in the area. Lunches, snacks, and at least one dinner will be provided (more details to come soon).
Thursday, Sept 17th – Travel to the area, get settled in, and meet up with friends.
Friday, Sept 18th – Tour Day 1: Salton Sea and Coachella Valley
- Morning Field Tour
- Afternoon seminars from:
- Dr. Nic Van Buer (Professor of Geological Sciences, Cal Poly Pomona) on regional bedrock geology.
- Dr. Gareth Funning (Vice Chair of Earth and Planetary Sciences, Professor of Seismology, UC Riverside) discussing creep faults and the San Andreas.
- Afternoon tour of Big Morongo Canyon Preserve by interpretive staff.
Saturday, Sept 19th – Tour Day 2: Joshua Tree National Park, PSSAC Business Meeting and Banquet
- Field Tour through Joshua Tree National Park facilitated by Peter Fahnestock, NRCS Area Soil Scientist, Victorville, and co-author of the Joshua Tree Soil Survey.
Sunday, Sept 20th – Explore the area on your own as you travel home.
